Pay cut confirmed for Fiji's public servants

7:53 pm on 1 March 2007

Fiji's Public Service Commission has confirmed that public servants will have their pay cut by five per cent from next week.

This follows the interim Public Service Reform Minister Poseci Bune's announcement of the move yesterday.

The Fijilive website quotes the commission's employment relations director, Peni Naqasima, appealing to public servants for their understanding in view of the financial and economic hardships facing Fiji.

Mr Naqasima says the pay cut was a small sacrifice, compared to the 15 and 12 per cent mandatory pay cuts imposed after the 1987 and 2000 coups.

He says the full details of the pay cut will be announced by interim Finance Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, during the revised Budget presentation tomorrow.
