Vanuatu's Prime Minister, Ham Lini, has been holding meetings after a violent inter- island clash between the people of Ambrym and Tanna left two people dead and an unknown number of them seriously injured.

The violence on Saturday afternoon also left a number of homes and vehicles burnt out.

The fighting erupted over an allegation that a man from Ambrym had used black magic to hurt a Tannese at Black Sands settlement.

A young Tannese was killed in a cane knife attack, allegedly by a man from Ambrym.

In return, a young man from Ambryn, who was visiting relatives in Port Vila, was also stabbed to death.

More than 100 people took sancturary in the compound of the paramilitary Vanuatu Mobile Force , fearing further violence.

Security at Port Vila's main hospital has been increased, with staff saying they feared groups from both sides would come to "finish off" the wounded.

Community leaders have criticised the police and Government for doing nothing to quell the situation.
