The New Caledonian government in cooperation with the French embassy has launched an event in Wellington to lift the profile of the territory.

Called the New Zealand New Caledonia 2007 season, it will see athletes, artists, musicians and dancers from the territory tour New Zealand to perform.

Attending the launch were several representatives from New Caledonia, including its minister for economic development, Didier Leroux, and Kanak regional cooperation representative, Rodrigue Tiavouane.

Mr Leroux says he hopes that the event will promote New Caledonia to its neighbours.

"They could come and visit us more often and we could exchange more things. We could trade more and we could have more tourists of one side and the other coming to visit."

Mr Leroux says the territory's government wants to better integrate itself and play a greater role in the region.
