Classes suspended at PNG University of Technology in Lae

2:03 pm on 13 March 2007

Classes at Papua New Guinea's University of Technology in Lae have been officially suspended for a week, with agreement reached for a full resumption from next Monday.

The Post Courier reports that a breakthrough has been made in the impasse between University Council and the National Academic Staff Association (NASA).

But while the truce was being announced, there were reports the NASA members had signed forms to resign enmasse.

However, there have been a number of concessions offered to NASA by the council.

These include a provision for a second party to investigate the allegations of mismanagement by the administration.

This is aside from the investigation to be done on the same allegations by the Ombudsman Commission.

Vice-Chancellor Misty Baloiloi has also issued a notice to heads of departments to prepare for resumption of classes next week.
