Fiji's deposed prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, is to seek a court order to allow him to return to the capital after he fled Suva just after the December 5th military takeover.

The Fijilive news website says Mr Qarase's lawyer, Tevita Fa, has confirmed they are looking into the matter.

Mr Fa says it will be a separate case from the one in which Mr Qarase and the SDL party are challenging the overthrow of their government.

Mr Qarase is reported to be questioning why the military is preventing him from leaving his home island in the Lau Group since he arrived there on December 7th.

He says it is a violation of his constitutional right to free movement.

The military is reported to have told airline and shipping companies not to give passage to Mr Qarase.
