Tonga government announces further extension of state of emergency

9:30 am on 17 March 2007

Tonga's Prime Minister, Dr. Feleti Sevele, has extended the state of emergency in force over parts of the capital, Nuku'alofa.

The Tonga Broadcasting Commission says the decision, announced yesterday, gave no indication of when the state of emergency would be lifted.

The Prime Minister said he was acting on the advice of the Minister of Police that public order in Nuku'alofa continues to be seriously threatened.

He said the proclamation was for the sole purpose of maintaining public order for all the people of the country.
