MP wants polling in PNG highlands deferred

5:08 pm on 19 March 2007

The Papua New Guinea MP Yarka Kappa says people in the Highlands region are calling for the 2007 general elections to be deferred, and the term of this Parliament to be extended by another 12 months.

Mr Kappa, who heads the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Law and Order, says this is needed due to the worsening law and order situation there.

He said they needed the support of both the Government and the Opposition to amend the Constitution to extend the life of this Parliament.

Violence involving the use of firearms and widespread irregularities had caused elections in six electorates in the Southern Highlands to be declared failures.

He said it was obvious that intending candidates were arming supporters with firearms and ammunition in their bid to win the election.

The National newspaper reports that Mr Kappa is touring the Highlands to gauge views of community leaders and relevant stakeholders on the issue.

The committee is to present its findings and recommendations to Parliament in its next sitting at the end of March.
