Fiji journalist says media too accepting of regime line

5:09 pm on 19 March 2007

A Suva journalist falsely accused of being behind a controversial internet blogspot says the Fiji media is too accepting of what the military says.

Ricardo Morris believes some elements in Fiji's media are trying to discredit him by suggesting he's gone into hiding over Intelligentsiya.blogspot.com, which criticises the military.

Some media sources in Fiji have claimed that Ricardo Morris's whereabouts are unknown after an email was circulated suggesting he's behind it.

But the freelance journalist says he's at home in Suva and while he owns the Intelligentsiya.com domain name, he's got nothing to do with the blogsite.

He says he suspects the email sent out under the name of Loyal Fijian could have come from someone within the military.

"I think we could be a bit more critical and a bit less accepting of stuff that's coming out from the military. But you know I suppose it's the circumstances that we're under and each journalist, whether they can sustain such pressure from the military or whether they can fight against it."

Mr Morris says journalists are having to work in an environment of self-censorship.
