French humanitarian relief to Vanuatu a gesture of solidarity

7:54 am on 22 March 2007

The French Ambassador in Port Vila says the delivery of four tonnes of humanitarian relief to Vanuatu from New Caledonia is an expression of solidarity.

A French military aircraft on Tuesday flew in humanitarian assistance for about 150 people displaced after violence broke out in the capital earlier in the month.

The fighting involving residents of the Blacksands squatter settlement left three dead and damage to property.

The French relief includes rice and tinned food and essential items such as utensils, bedding and clothes.

The Ambassador, Pierre Mayaudon, says the connection to the large French community in Vanuatu gave their assistance an extra dimension:

"Just by coincidence of calendar that the supply came on the very day of the international day of Francophonie. And indeed, Francophonie is not only sharing a common language but maybe more importantly sharing common values, the first of them being solidarity. So it was a good example of how solidarity can express to the benefit of people in distress."
