American Samoa senators move to impose 500 percent excise tax on Samoa beer

Seven senators in American Samoa have moved to impose a 500% excise tax on Samoa's Vailima Beer.

The current excise tax on beer and alcoholic beverages is 190%.

Yesterday senators introduced the bill which would also increase the tax from 12.5 cents to 62.5 cents on alcohol cigarettes from Samoa .

All other goods imported from Samoa for resale shall be 20% up form the current five percent.

One of the sponsors of the bill, Senator Faiivae Galeai says the intention is to raise additional revenue for the government.
