Fiji braces for floods

4:23 pm on 23 March 2007

Weather officials in Fiji say the chance of a tropical cyclone developing is slim, but low lying parts of the country could be hit by flash flooding.

Heavy rain in the central division over the last two days had prompted fears a cyclone was developing.

But experts say the tropical depression which was located 460 kilometres north-west of Nadi has moved away.

The director of the Fiji meteorological service, Rajendra Prasad, says the system encountered a strong vertical wind shear and a cyclone has been ruled out at this point.

Mr Prasad says however the potential for flash flooding in low lying areas remains.

"At this stage we expect the northern part of the country, in particular Vanua Levu, Taveuni and the north eastern part of Viti Levu to experience rain more often with heavier falls and the prospects of flash flooding there would be higher. That's not to say that other places won't receive that heavy rain as well."

Mr Prasad says the last thing Fiji needs is a tropical cyclone given the political upheaval it has faced.
