American Samoa govt looking at short term worker permit's legislation

8:19 am on 27 March 2007

The American Samoan governor Togiola Tulafono says he intends brining in legislation in the next term of the Fono to

establish short term guest worker permits for Samoans.

The guest worker program was first agreed at the inter Samoa talks in August last year.

The governor says the special permits are needed to help the canneries provide the workforce they

need.

Star Kist Samoa says it needs an additional 400 workers to produce 20,000 pouches of tuna

per day.

The governor says the special permits will make it easier to hire workers from Samoa when there's a

need and leave when they are no longer needed.
