A Niue MP says members of the Niuean community in New Zealand should be running for the New Zealand parliament rather than looking for a seat in the island's assembly.
Calls for an overseas seat have been around for many years but were raised again last week when the premier, Young Vivian, spoke with the expatriate community in Auckland.
Mr Vivian says he is prepared to pursue the idea of a seat though not the six seats asked for by some.
MP Hima Douglas, who was formerly the high commissioner to New Zealand, says an overseas seat in this day and age is very unusual.
"I want to hear what is their reason for wanting representation in the local parliament when the predominant view here on the island is that they should be concentrating on getting themselves elected into the New Zealand parliament and maybe do some good for the island there."
