Teachers in Guam face losing 14 percent pay rise

154 teachers in Guam face losing their 14 percent pay rise because they have not updated their teaching certificates.

Authorities in Guam say the education department sent notices out to teachers earlier this week.

Superintendent of the department, Luis Reyes, says four or five administrators also received similar notices for not having their current certification as administrators.

Mr Reyes says once teachers or administrators update their certifications, their 14-percent pay rise will be restored.

Teachers can update their certification if they have the required college credits to submit, or if they have taken classes at the University of Guam to become certified.

Mr Reyes says he's talking to the education board to allow the non-certified teachers to stay if they're working on having their certification updated.
