Former American Samoa prison guard Siaumau Mapu has been charged by the federal government with two counts of making false and fraudulent statements.

In a superseding indictment, a federal grand jury alleged that on or about April 10, 2004 Mapu knowingly and willfully made false and fraudulent statements and representations to an FBI agent.

Namely that he did not see inmate Sopa Siagigi being assaulted by former prison warden Mika Kelemete.

Mapu made his initial appearance in the Honolulu federal district court yesterday and entered a not guilty plea.

His trial is set for July 24.
