Call for American Samoa's contribution to Samoa to be measured

3:30 pm on 29 March 2007

An American Samoan senator, Alo Stevenson, has called for an assessment on how much money Samoa is receiving from American Samoa.

Senator Alo says it cannot be discounted that everyone has blood ties to Samoa and it is evident that a large part of Samoa's economic base comes from the territory.

He suggested that the Senate gather information from the banks, from wire transfers and other sources to determine the economic benefits that Samoa receives from the territory .

The senator says he is also concerned about a policy prohibiting athletes who were not born in American Samoa from representing the territory at the August South Pacific Games.

The Senate President, Lolo Letalu Moliga, says whatever differences exist in government relations, the traditional links and relationships between the two Samoas should be maintained.
