Strike action looms in Fiji

6:06 am on 2 April 2007

Fiji is on the brink of nationwide strikes as trade unions continue to ballot for industrial action against the interim Government and employers.

The Fiji Times says Air Traffic Management Association of Fiji is the latest to carry out a secret ballot for strike action against Airports Fiji Limited.

The Public Service Association and the Fiji Nursing Association have already voted in favour of industrial action and two teachers unions are due to vote this week.

The unions have been threatening to strike after the interim Government decided to reduce civil servants' pay by 5 per cent and drop the retirement age from 60 to 55 years.
