Fiji teachers still pondering strike action over pay cuts

6:44 pm on 5 April 2007

The Fijian Teachers Association says the question of whether teachers are providing essential services which dictates whether they need to give 28 days strike notice will be referred to the AGM which meets next month.

The General Secretary, Maika Namudu, says strike action has not been ruled out as a response to the government's plans to cut civil servants' pay by five percent and reduce the retirement age from 60 to 55.

Mr Namadu says the results of today's secret ballot on the matter will be released next week.

He says teachers would like to avoid strike action and say it is likely a second meeting will go ahead with the government next week.

However, if talks do not resolve the issue, he says teachers may decide to take action.

"Ultimately, if we cannot get a resolution from government and we do not have any other ways of resolving it, then the members will have to show a bit of protest for their dissatisfaction."
