Schyle may recontest French Polynesia assembly presidency

3:22 pm on 10 April 2007

The president of the French Polynesian assembly, Philip Schyle, has not excluded the possibility that he will again be a candidate when the assembly votes on the position later this week.

Mr Schyle, who is the leader of the small centrist Fetia Api Party, was elected last year although he says he didn't belong to any majority.

He was chosen with the support of members of the Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party which last April was in opposition.

Mr Schyle says he won't be demanding to be chosen but says he could add some calm to the post.

The Tahoeraa leader Gaston Flosse is keen to have his son-in-law, Edouard Fritch, elected.

The candidate for the opposition will be Antony Geros who was assembly president before.
