CNMI medical visa plan criticised

The president of Saipan's Chamber of Commerce has criticised a legislative proposal that seeks to grant entry permits to foreign patients for treatment in the CNMI.

The Saipan Tribune newspaper reports Juan Guerrero as saying it's a ridiculous plan because the Commonwealth doesn't have adequate medical facilities and staff, with many locals preferring to travel elsewhere for medical treatment.

The bill now needs the governor's signature after it recently passed in the Senate without amendments.

Authored by Representative Ray Yumul, the bill proposes to regulate the entry of visitors who enter the Commonwealth for the purpose of medical treatment.

The congressman said the proposed legislation was in line with efforts to develop the CNMI as a retirement destination.
