The director of the special relations unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, David Payton, says helping Niue's private sector grow is a major priority for New Zealand.

Last week, the Governor-General, Anand Satyanand was in Niue for an official 2 day visit where he had the chance to see a number of New Zealand funded projects and other business ventures.

New Zealand is Niue's main aid donor.

David Payton says New Zealand wants to help grow Niue's private sector as the public sector has been dominant over many years.

"Now with tourism we are really looking at opportunities for small business to start growing, to start creating economic opportunity. Niue is a very good place to invest in, if they want a lifestyle which Niue can offer."
