Thousands of workers at Papua's huge Freeport mine remain on strike

5:48 pm on 20 April 2007

About 4-thousand Papuan workers at the Freeport mine in Indonesia's Papua province remain on strike in a dispute over their log of claims.

The mine management has indicated operations continue despite what it describes as an illegal inductrial strike which has entered its fourt day.

The workers are demanding increases in their wages, more representation at the management level, and a greater share of the benefits from the lucrative mine operations for Papuans.

Scheduled meetings with management have failed to materialise and the workers are demanding to meet with Freeport management representatives from headquarters in New Orleans.

Worker representatives say they will remain off work until this discussion occurs.
