Alternative forms of energy being discussed by Pacific officials

1:50 pm on 24 April 2007

An energy meeting being held in the Cook Islands has revealed that Pacific countries must step away from fossil fuels and find alternative sources of energy.

More than 50 energy officials from 17 countries including Fiji, Vanuatu and Nauru will discuss the impact of rising fuel costs and other energy security measures currently facing the region.

The Pacific Islands Geoscience Commission manager of the community lifeline, Paul Fairburn says many Pacific countries are already looking at alternative fuel.

"Solar power has been used quite extensively in some of the more remote and rural areas affectively for lighting, and refrigeration and some of the health centres and clinics so that's quite and effective utilisation of that"
