Porgera gold mine in Papua New Guinea closed by land protest

Operations have been stalled at the giant Porgera gold mine in Papua New Guinea's Highlands with landowners wanting the company to address their resettlement demands.

The mine operators were forced to halt work on Tuesday after local landowners blocked two access routes during a protest.

Some members of the Porgera Landowners' Association had taken action to pressure the company to recognise the need for landowners to relocate because of the mine's encroachment on their land and food gardens.

They say they want to renegotiate their mining agreement to include resettlement needs which were not addressed in an agreement the company signed with other landowners.
