Melanesian Spearhead Group officials are this week in Papua New Guinea considering applications for the new post of MSG Director-General.
The MSG selection panel chairman Parai Tamei says their visit to Port Moresby is the final leg in the interview process which has seen around twenty applications.
The Fiji Times reports that 11 the applicants are from PNG, one from Solomon Islands, four from Vanuatu and four from Fiji.
Mr Tamei, who is PNG's High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, says the applicants include several former ministers and parliamentarians, and three women.
The director general for the MSG secretariat is expected to take up his post by July 2007 and has to be appointed before the next MSG summit, coinciding with the opening of the new secretariat building being built in Port Vila, Vanuatu.
The selection panel is aiming to make recommendations on the best candidate to the MSG senior officials meeting in Port Moresby tomorrow.
