New Zealand says risks in Fiji remain

The New Zealand foreign ministry has issued a new travel advisory on Fiji, saying there are some security risks.

It says the security situation remains uncertain as there are indications of a deterioration in respect for the rule of law.

A state of emergency is in force and the advisory says there are signs that crime levels are increasing, with robbery, theft and incidents of assault being reported by locals and tourists alike.

The advisory says there have been numerous reports of intimidation, detention and interrogation involving both the Military and the Police.

Military intervention in Police matters has affected the interests of New Zealanders in some instances.

Public gatherings of more than five people are prohibited.
