9:25 am on 5 May 2007

The more than 5,000 voters of Vaimauga west constituency in Samoa go to the polls today after last year's winner of the seat, opposition MP Sililoto Tolo Tua'ifaiva, passed away suddenly.

Of the ten candidates competing for the vacant seat, eight are running under the banner of the ruling Human Rights Protection party, or HRPP, one for the Samoa Party and another as an independent.

The Samoa Democratic United party or SDUP has no candidate.

Polling booths will close at 3 o'clock this afternoon with the preliminary results expected to be announced later in the evening.
