Solomons opposition worried about push to change police commissioner position

3:49 pm on 7 May 2007

Solomon Islands opposition has expressed concern about a government plan to amend the constitution to allow the Commissioner of Police to be answerable to the Prime Minister.

The opposition leader, Fred Fono, says the Opposition will not support any government moves to reduce the constitutional position of the Commissioner.

He says the opposition is aware of the plan by the government to remove the post from the Police Commission's authority.

Mr Fono accuses the Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, of trying to slowly turn Solomon Islands into a dictatorship
