Reports from Papua New Guinea say riot police have been used to restore peace after a gun battle between police and members of a cult involved in human sacrifices.

The newspaper, The National, reports that several people were killed and many injured in fighting last week in Finschhafen on the Morobe coast.

The newspaper says police believe they are dealing with a cult movement involved in making human sacrifices to their gods.
