Pacific representatives in Thailand to learn about fish hatcheries

6:00 am on 14 May 2007

A marine finfish hatchery course, with an emphasis on grouper species, begins this week in Thailand.

The three week course is a Secretariat of the Pacific Community and Network of Aquaculture Centre in Asia-Pacific initiative.

Seven participants from various fisheries departments in the region and private sector operations - from Papua New Guinea, Fiji, New Caledonia and French Polynesia are to take part in the week course.

SPC Aquaculture Adviser, Ben Ponia, says the marine fish farming sector is one of the most dynamic in Asia.

He says developing skills in marine hatchery operation in the Pacific region is a new but promising venture, given the growing interest and demand for fish on local and international markets.
