Three department heads in Papua New Guinea have been summoned to appear before the Commission of Inquiry into the Finance Department to explain how millions of kina had been improperly paid out.

The three heads - Police Commissioner Gari Baki, Defence Secretary Fred Punangi and Works Secretary Alphonse Niggins - were summoned to provide documents on certain payments perceived to have been irregular and fraudulent.

The Post Copurier newspaper says the trio sought an audience with the commissioner, requesting an extension of time to sort out the requested documents.

This was granted and the three will now appear on different dates yet to be set.
