9:41 am on 16 May 2007

The steering committees looking into the formation of the Solomons Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Inquiry into the Land Dealings on Guadalcanal have held their first talks this week .

Members of the two steering committees came together to discuss how the two Commissions will work

together to oversee and address some of the still pressing and sensitive issues that affect the country.

The main objective of the Truth and ReconciliationCommission is to involve all relevant stakeholders in the reconciliation processand to examine the root causes of the ethnic tension.

The Commission of Inquiry into the land Dealings on Guadalcanal will inquire into and make findings on the validity, acquisition, occupation and settlement of certain customary land on Guadalcanal, especially on those lands affected during the ethnic tension.

The two steering committees are finalising the draft Terms of Reference that the Commissions will operate under.

Once it is approved, the draft will then be circulated for relevant stakeholders to comment on before it is presented to the Prime Minister for the formal appointments of the Commissioners.
