Sacked Fiji election official threatens legal action to prevent his replacement

Fiji's ousted supervisor of elections, Semesa Karavaki, is threatening legal action to block any further appointment to the post and to block any general election from taking place.

The Fiji Times quotes Mr Karavaki as saying that under the constitution the post of supervisor of elections could not be terminated by the President.

Mr Karavaki says only the Constitutional Offices Commission has that power but he was sacked without following the constitution.

He says the Commission is supposed to be an independent body that even the president could not touch.

But the chairman of the Constitutional Offices Commission, Rishi Ram, says Mr Karavaki was terminated through the promulgation of a decree by the President and the President's powers are superior to those of the commission.

The interim attorney general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says rather than creating instability, Mr Karavaki should take his claims to a court of law.
