Fiji's military has called on people not to be alarmed if they see soldiers running in full battle gear on the streets and surrounding areas just outside of Suva.

The military spokesman, Major Neumi Leweni, says infantry units will be conducting a two-day, inter-company skills-at-arms competition from this morning.

He says the competition will test the physical conditioning and theoretical knowledge of troops with one company emerging as the winners at the end.

The exercises, which began at 6.00am local time today, will cover areas in Samabula, Tamavua, Nabua, Nasinu, Wainibuku, Waila, Sawani and some neighbourhoods in Nausori.
