Papua New Guinea's Electoral Commission says that more than 2700 candidates nationwide have been nominated to contest the 2007 national elections.
In 2002, there were 2836 nominations contesting the 109 parliamentary seats.
Our correspondent in Papua New Guinea, Alex Rheeney reports.
"What they need to work on now is to actually connect the candidates to the political parties that they will be represented during the general elections. What has come out of the latest figures they have released is that Eastern Highlands Province so far has the highest number of candidates who will be contesting the Provincial as well as the open seats in that Province, the total currently stands at 357. They haven't released the specifics of the number of women candidates, however they have indicated that kind of information should be released over the next few days."
