Fiji unions defy calls to accept wage cuts

12:47 pm on 18 May 2007

Public sector unions in Fiji plan to hold a meeting next week to set a date for their strike against a five percent pay cut.

In its budget, the interim administration announced the pay cuts for all public servants and a reduced retirement age of 55.

The unions have vowed they won't accept this and a spokesperson for the Confederation of Public Sector Unions, Nirbhay Singh, says they have a mandate and a strike might now be close.

"Because there has been no progress in the dispute, there have been no new offers, there has been no change of position by the government, we are continuing with our original plan. By next week we may have a joint meeting with all the affiliates, where a common strategy and a common date will be targetted."

Nirbay Singh says the unions are not afraid of further cuts to their members' salaries.
