Solomon Islands acting prime minister says the Sogavare-led government offered no deputy prime minister's position to the opposition Leader, Fred Fono.
Mr Fono said earlier the government is trying to lure members from the opposition bench to command a two-thirds majority in parliament to enable it to introduce constitutional changes.
Gordon Darcy Lilo says the government commands a comfortable majority and does not need the services of Mr Fono.
Mr Lilo says he thinks it is very embarrassing for Mr Fono to make such a public statement when no such offer was made.
