Samoa's parliament to elect new Head of State in June

6:20 am on 23 May 2007

Samoa's next Head of State will be elected by Parliament in June.

The chief executive officer of the Ministry of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Auseuga'efa Va'asatia, on television last night said both members of the council of deputies are now the acting Head of States until a successor is selected.

Our correspondent in Samoa says one of them, the former prime minister, Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Efi, is the preferred candidate to take over as Head of State.

However it is expected that Parliamentarians will be given time to nominate the best candidate to become the country's next leader for at least five years.
