Fiji military commander silent on top police job

Fiji's military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says he will not comment on the appointment of a new police commissioner to replace Australian Andrew Hughes who left last year.

The Fijilive website reports that the deputy army commander, Captain Esala Teleni, is said to be keen to become the next police commissioner.

The Public Service Commission says it is looking for suitable applicants locally before deciding whether to advertise abroad.

One of the applicants is the acting police commissioner, Romanu Tikotikoca, who took up the position two months after the military leadership appointed Lt Col Jimi Koroi as acting police chief as part of its takeover in December.

Commodore Bainiamara says he won't comment on the appointment process - otherwise he will be called a dictator.
