Hawaiian Air proceeds with lay-offs

5:48 pm on 25 May 2007

Hawaiian Airlines has laid off 98 non-union employees and has announced it will not fill another 38 vacant positions as part of a companywide cost-cutting effort.

The layoffs include 47 of its 224 management positions.

Hawaiian says the measure will save it four million US dollars a year and comes as it is facing soaring fuel prices and increased competition on its interisland and mainland routes.

The airline says the reductions are driven more by changing consumer behaviour than by low fares, and the layoffs are the result of a six-month study.
