Fiji's interim government has announced the end of the state of emergency in the country, nearly six months after last December's coup.
The Interim Prime Minister and military leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama made this announcement to media just after 6 oclock last night.
Many pro-democracy groups have accused the government of using the state of emergency to abuse human rights.
But Commodore Bainimarama said the public emergency regulations, or PER, were put in place to move the country forward peacefully with minimum civil unrest or disruption.

PER was put in place, and was extended only after security assessments carried out by the RFMF, police and the ministry of Home Affairs, unfortunately some including some of our neighbouring countries instead of understanding and recognising the local and present dymanics have largely reacted to PER and reacted to it negatively.
