For the first time coral farmed in Fiji has gone on sale making it the country's latest eco-friendly product.
The Fiji Times reports that coral farms have been set up by coastal rural communities on Motoriki Island in the Lomaiviti Group through a project started by an NGO, Partners in Community Development Fiji (PCDF) and an overseas group.
Project scientist Austin Bowdem-Kirby says every community that has approval to grow farmed coral for sale is carrying out best practices in coral reef conservation.
He says farmed coral can be easily identified because it is grown on small, button-shaped concrete discs.
The project is aimed at addressing the damaging impact of wild coral harvesting by providing the alternative of farming.
