Tonga cabinet ministers launch takeover of Rugby Union executive

9:26 am on 6 June 2007

There's a standoff between some of Tonga's cabinet ministers, and the Rugby Union executive committee.

This follows an attempt by three ministers including the Minister of Works the honourable Nuku to oust the current board..

They appointed the honourable Nuku as the new chairman but retained current vice president, Sione Taumoepeau.

The current chairman Sangster Saulala says they're not moving despite an order by the self appointed committee to do so.

"Oh we're standing strong on our position from the legal side, and some of the police came to the office and we have spoken to them and told them our position, and we said we won't move, we have our boys there and we won't move from the office and we told them the legal side and they have agreed that the other committee shouldn't come and start something that will cause trouble."

Saulala believes the new committee want to go to the Rugby World Cup in France later this year and that's the reason for their action.
