The number of hotel rooms in Fiji is expected to grow by 17.2% next year arising from the developments projects currently under way.

For many years Fiji's tourism and airline industry had complained that there were not enough rooms to cater for the demand from tourists.

The chief executive of the Fiji Visitors Bureau, Bill Gavoka, now says the number of hotel rooms grew by 16.5% in 2005, 2.3% last year and will grow a further 5.2% this year.

The Fiji Times quotes Mr Gavoka as saying visitor numbers need to grow by 10% each year to fill the growing number of hotel rooms.
