President of Lawasia leaves Fiji post with regret

The president of Lawasia, Mah Weng Kwai, says he leaves his post as commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption with regret.

Mr Kwai's was chosen two weeks ago, but his appointment was questioned by the Commonwealth Law Society, which argued it would lend credibility to Fiji's interim administration.

The Fiji Times reports Mr Kwai as saying his resignation is a reaction to the argument that his appointment could be interpreted as a political statement.

Mr Kwai says he made the decision to step down after consulting professional colleagues.
