American Samoa government clamp down on overseas travel by staff

Governor Togiola Tulafono's administration in American Samoa has established an internal policy panel to monitor government travel.

During last week's cabinet meeting, Togiola told directors that they must comply with government policy and asked cabinet members to get quotes for travel for comparison instead of just using one quote.

It was also revealed that the government has a travel policy committee charged with setting travel criteria and other policies.

There have been long standing complaints about abuse of travel expenses by some senior government officials and the governor has cautioned departments to authorise travel only when necessary.
