Goro Nickel in New Caledonia has changed the route of a planned pollution waste pipe after an indigenous group built a new village on where the pipe was to go.
The Goro project is the biggest industrial enterprise in the South Pacific, but faces strong opposition on mainly environmental grounds.
In April 2006, Kanak Rheebu Nuu activists caused damage estimated at 10 million US dollars at the Goro site.
Activists say the nickel company will now build its pipeline around the village.
This is expected to lengthen the pipeline by nine kilometres.
