Methodist Church views rejected by member of anti-corruption committee

10:26 am on 14 June 2007

A prominent member of the Independent Committee Investigating Indigenous Fijian Institutions has called on Fiji's interim administration to disregard the views of the Methodist Church on setting up a National Council for Building a Better Fiji.

Radio Legend says Kalaveti Batibasaga has reacted strongly after statements by executives of the Methodist Church and the Assembly of Christian Churches

Mr Batibasaga says people should realize that these are the views of only some church executives sitting in their ivory towers and not the indication of the intent of the churches as a whole.

Mr Batibasaga says church leaders were very much involved in the planning and design of the coups of 1987 and 2000

He says people need to be careful in how they assess church executives' views now that the country is moving forward after the December military takeover.

Mr Batibasaga says the church leaders are very much confused and they are confusing the issues.
