Vanuatu's Sope says there is unease over UMP switch

A leading Vanuatu opposition member says some government members are uneasy with the decision by the Union of Moderate Parties to join the coalition.

The UMP and its leader Serge Vohor joined the coalition government this week after the Vanuaaku Pati left the coalition.

VP members signed up with the opposition to support a planned motion of no-confidence in the prime minister, Ham Lini.

The motion was moved by Mr Vohor on Monday when he was still opposition leader, however it's now likely to be withdrawn.

A senior opposition MP and former Prime Minister, Barak Sope, says many in the government are suspicious of the UMP leader.

"They're still considering whether they'll go along with his move into government because Ham Lini became Prime Minister because of his (Mr Vohor's) removal over the Taiwan issue. So almost everyone who is now with him in government opposed him over the Taiwan issue and I think they still oppose him over the same view."
