New Zealand cabinet to discuss further sanctions against Fiji today

10:42 am on 18 June 2007

The New Zealand cabinet is meeting today to consider the possibility of further sanctions against Fiji over Michael Green's expulsion.

Radio New Zealand's political reporter Liz Banas says there are a range of options available to the government.

"Cabinet is likely to consider extending the existing ban on travel to New Zealand by those who supported the coup to prevent them transitting New Zealand. The list of those banned could also be extended and there is likely to be discussion of whether the New Zealand assets of those involved in the coup could be frozen. The way aid money is distributed could also change by direct funding of programmes rather than through Fiji's government agencies."
